For Riftbound collectors, the chase starts at Riftbound overnumbered cards and climbs through Signature and Ultimate printings. These cards are printed in tiny numbers, look nothing like the base versions and are the cards people grade, frame and trade. This guide explains what makes each tier special, how to identify them and how to buy and protect them.
What are Riftbound overnumbered cards?
An overnumbered card has a collector number above the set's base card count. That's where the name comes from. Overnumbered cards are Showcase versions of existing cards with:
- A special illustration different from the base and alternate art versions
- Cold foil and spot UV finishing, which gives the card texture and shine
- Much lower print numbers than any other regular rarity
How many overnumbered cards each set has depends partly on artist availability, so the count varies from set to set.
Signature overnumbered cards
About one in ten overnumbered cards you pull will be a Signature overnumbered. These add the artist's signature, printed in gold foil, to the overnumbered card. They're not hand-signed: the signature is part of the print. Based on community box openings, that works out to roughly one Signature per thirty booster displays.
Ultimate cards
Ultimate cards sit above everything else. According to Riot, they appear in fewer than 0.1% of booster packs, and not every set has one. They're reserved for particularly special cards. Radiance, for example, has an Ultimate Rare that Riot says appears in about 0.025% of packs, roughly one in 4,000. Our Riftbound Radiance guide covers that set.
How rare is each tier?
| Tier | Approximate rate | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Alternate art | 2–4 per booster display | Community openings |
| Overnumbered | About 1 per 3 displays | Community openings |
| Signature overnumbered | About 1 per 30 displays | Community openings |
| Ultimate | Fewer than 1 in 1,000 packs | Riot |
Community figures are averages from large openings, not guarantees. You can open several displays without seeing an overnumbered card. For the full rarity ladder, see our Riftbound rarities guide.
How to identify an overnumbered card
- Check the collector number. If it's higher than the set's base count, it's overnumbered.
- Look at the finish. Cold foil and spot UV feel and look different from standard foil. Tilt the card under a light.
- Compare the art. Overnumbered art differs from the base and alternate art versions of the same card.
- For Signatures, look for the gold-foil signature on the card face.
When buying, always confirm the exact printing. Base, alternate art and overnumbered cards share a name, so a listing that only gives the card name isn't enough. Our Riftbound singles listings name the printing.
What makes an overnumbered card valuable?
Several factors drive collector demand:
- The champion. Popular League of Legends champions draw more collectors.
- Playability. An overnumbered version of a card that sees competitive play has players and collectors competing for it.
- The art and artist. Some illustrations and artists have a following of their own.
- Condition. Foil and spot UV cards show wear easily, so clean copies command more.
- Tier. A Signature version of the same card is about ten times scarcer.
Prices move with all of these, and with bans. We'd never suggest buying cards as an investment. Buy the cards you want to own.
Protecting overnumbered and Signature cards
These cards deserve more than a single sleeve:
- Sleeve immediately after pulling, in a perfect-fit inner sleeve.
- Double-sleeve or use a semi-rigid holder or toploader.
- Keep them out of decks. Play with the base version and keep the overnumbered copy safe.
- Display in a case. A magnetic holder or a GradedGuard case for graded slabs keeps cards safe on a shelf.
See our Riftbound sleeves and storage guide for sizes.
Should you grade overnumbered cards?
Overnumbered and Signature cards are the most common grading candidates in Riftbound. Grading authenticates the card, records its condition and seals it in a protective slab. Our Riftbound grading guide explains how to decide and what graders look for.
