If you already play another card game, or used to, the question is simple: is Riftbound worth it? This post compares Riftbound with Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh! on the things that decide whether a game sticks: how it plays, how resources work, what it costs to compete, the event scene and collecting. We sell all of these games, so we're not trying to talk you out of any of them.
Riftbound in one paragraph
Riftbound is Riot Games' League of Legends TCG. You choose a champion Legend, build a 40-card deck in two of six domains, and race to 8 points by conquering and holding battlefields. Resources come from a separate 12-card rune deck, so you never draw too many or too few. It launched in October 2025 and released four sets in 2026. Our Riftbound beginner's guide has the full introduction.
Riftbound vs. Magic: The Gathering
Similarities: two-colour-style deck identity (domains), a mix of units, spells and equipment-like gear, and spells with different timing.
Differences: Magic uses land cards shuffled into your deck, which can leave you short of or flooded with mana. Riftbound's separate rune deck fixes that. Magic games are usually won by reducing life to zero. Riftbound is a race for points on a shared board.
Who'll like Riftbound: Magic players who enjoy limited-style board combat and want fewer games decided by mana problems.
Riftbound vs. Pokémon TCG
Similarities: a strong IP with a large fan base, approachable art and a big collector scene.
Differences: Pokémon is built around one Active Pokémon and Benched support, with Energy cards in the deck. Riftbound has units spread across battlefields, and positioning matters more. Riftbound's spell timing and Reactions give it more back-and-forth during the opponent's turn.
Who'll like Riftbound: Pokémon players who want more interaction and board positioning.
Riftbound vs. Yu-Gi-Oh!
Similarities: a dedicated competitive scene and a strong collector market for high-rarity printings.
Differences: modern Yu-Gi-Oh! can involve long combo turns and an opponent who responds with hand traps. Riftbound turns are shorter and more evenly traded, with both players acting around showdowns and combat. Yu-Gi-Oh! has decades of cards. Riftbound's pool is a few sets deep, so it's easier to learn.
Who'll like Riftbound: Yu-Gi-Oh! players who want something newer with a smaller card pool. If you play both, our Yu-Gi-Oh! beginner's guide is a good refresher.

What does it cost to play Riftbound competitively?
A small card pool helps. With five sets out and no rotation yet, you're building from a few hundred playable cards rather than decades of printings. Most competitive decks rely on a set of key cards for one Legend, and you can buy those as Riftbound singles. Read Riftbound singles vs. booster boxes for the most cost-efficient approach.
The event scene
Riftbound is a newer game, so its organized play is still growing, and Riot has invested heavily: weekly Nexus Nights, monthly Nexus Cups, Regionals, Continental Championships from 2027 and an annual World Championship. Many local stores in Canada run weekly events. See our Riftbound tournaments guide.
Collecting Riftbound
Riftbound's Showcase rarities give collectors a clear chase: alternate arts, overnumbered cards, gold-foil Signature overnumbered cards and Ultimate cards that appear in fewer than 0.1% of packs. Our Riftbound rarities guide covers each tier.
So, is Riftbound worth it?
It's worth trying if you:
- Like League of Legends or its characters
- Want a newer game with a manageable card pool
- Prefer interactive turns over long solitaire combos
- Are tired of losing to mana problems
It might not be for you if you want a decades-deep card pool, or if your local store doesn't run Riftbound events yet. Check PlayRiftbound.com for stores near you.
