Riftbound Tournaments Explained: Nexus Nights to the World Championship

Ultima Cards Riftbound guide cover: Tournaments explained

Riftbound tournaments run on a ladder, from casual weekly store nights to an annual World Championship. Riot has expanded and restructured that ladder heading into 2027, so a lot of older information online is out of date. This guide explains every tier as of October 2026, what's changing, and how to find and register for events.

How Riftbound tournaments are organized

Tier Where Who it's for
Nexus Nights Local stores, weekly Casual players; no competitive path
Nexus Cup Local stores, monthly A step up from Nexus Nights
Challenge Series Selected stores Competitive store play (replaces Summoner Skirmish)
Showdown Series Larger events Players moving into premier play
Regionals Major events, 3–4 per set Open, competitive; formerly Regional Qualifiers
Continentals Four global three-day events Top competitive players
World Championship Annual The season's best

Nexus Nights: where everyone starts

Nexus Nights are weekly Riftbound events at participating game stores. They're designed for players who come back week after week, and they reward attendance rather than only winning. Nexus Nights don't feed into the competitive ladder, which makes them the most relaxed place to learn. If you're new, this is where to go. Bring a legal deck, sleeves and a willingness to ask questions.

Nexus Cups: monthly store events

Nexus Cups are a newer monthly in-store event. They're a little more structured than Nexus Nights and a good step for players who want to test a deck in a more serious setting without travelling.

Summoner Skirmish is retiring

Summoner Skirmish was Riftbound's original competitive store event, run twice per set. It concludes after Radiance. Its last windows were August 17 and September 14, 2026, and it's replaced in 2027 by the Challenge Series at curated stores. If you earned Skirmish byes, Riot says they stay valid throughout 2027 at Regionals, with compensation promised for any you don't use.

Regionals, Continentals and Worlds

The premier side of Riftbound has grown quickly:

  • Regional Qualifiers (2026) were open-entry 1v1 Constructed events with cash prizes and promos, held in Barcelona, Singapore and Los Angeles in late summer 2026. In 2027 they're renamed Regionals, with three or four per set.
  • Regional Championships take the top qualifiers. The European Regional Championship runs November 6–8, 2026 in Stuttgart with a $50,000 prize pool, and its Top 8 advance to the first World Championship. The North American Regional Championship runs alongside Convergence Fest in Las Vegas, December 11–13, 2026.
  • Continentals arrive in 2027 as four global three-day events.
  • The World Championship caps each season.

How to register for Riftbound events

Since September 14, 2026, store events are listed and registered through PlayRiftbound.com, Riot's official organized play site, replacing the previous Carde.io system. You sign in with your Riot ID. Use the site to find nearby stores, check formats and register for events, and confirm the details with the host store before you go.

Formats you'll see at events

  • Standard Constructed (1v1): the main competitive format. You bring a 40-card deck, runes, battlefields and up to 8 sideboard cards.
  • Constructed 2v2: team play with its own ban list. See our Riftbound 2v2 guide.
  • Pre-Rift: early-play events in the week before each set's release, often with new product.

Before any event, check the Riftbound ban list. Bans can take effect between sets.

Preparing for your first tournament

  1. Register a legal deck. Double-check your three battlefields against the ban list.
  2. Sleeve everything consistently. Damaged or marked sleeves can lead to penalties at competitive events. See our Riftbound sleeves guide.
  3. Know the final point rule. Many close games are lost to it. Review how to play Riftbound.
  4. Bring the basics: a deck box, a playmat, a way to track points and a pen.
  5. Plan your sideboard. Up to 8 cards for your most likely matchups.
