Yu-Gi-Oh! Sleeves and Card Size: How to Protect and Store Your Collection

Ultima Cards Yu-Gi-Oh! guide cover: Sleeves & storage

Yu-Gi-Oh! cards are smaller than Magic, Pokémon or Riftbound cards, so Yu-Gi-Oh! sleeves come in their own size, usually sold as "small" or "Japanese size." Buy the wrong size and your cards slide around in oversized sleeves. This guide covers card and sleeve sizes, how many sleeves you need, double-sleeving, tournament rules and storing your collection.

What size are Yu-Gi-Oh! cards?

Yu-Gi-Oh! cards measure about 59 × 86 mm, smaller than the 63 × 88 mm standard used by Magic, Pokémon and Riftbound. That's why Yu-Gi-Oh! needs its own sleeves.

Sleeve type Fits Use
Small / Japanese size Yu-Gi-Oh! cards Your main deck sleeve
Perfect-fit inner (small) Yu-Gi-Oh! cards, snugly The inner sleeve when double-sleeving
Standard size Magic, Pokémon, Riftbound Too large for Yu-Gi-Oh! as a single sleeve

Shop Japanese-size sleeves for Yu-Gi-Oh!, or browse all sleeves.

How many Yu-Gi-Oh! sleeves do you need?

Deck Cards
Main Deck 40 (up to 60)
Extra Deck Up to 15
Side Deck Up to 15
Total 70 for a typical 40-card deck

Most sleeve packs come in 60 or 100. A pack of 100 covers a full deck with spares, which is useful because sleeves wear and split over time.

Should you double-sleeve?

Double-sleeving means putting each card in a snug perfect-fit inner sleeve first, then into a regular small-size outer sleeve, often inserted from the opposite end to seal out dust. Benefits:

  • Extra protection against spills, dust and humidity
  • Stiffer, more uniform cards that shuffle well
  • Peace of mind for decks with valuable cards

If your deck includes Starlight Rares, Quarter Century Secret Rares or vintage cards, double-sleeving is worth it. See the Starlight Rare guide.

How to double-sleeve, step by step

  1. Inner sleeve, top down. Slide the card into a small perfect-fit sleeve, top edge first.
  2. Outer sleeve, opposite end. Slide the sleeved card into the outer sleeve bottom first, so the inner sleeve's opening faces the closed end of the outer sleeve. This seals the card on both ends.
  3. Check the fit. The outer sleeve should close without bulging. If it's tight, try a different inner sleeve brand. Fits vary slightly.
  4. Do the whole deck. Mixing double- and single-sleeved cards makes some cards feel different, which isn't allowed at events.

Matte or gloss?

Most competitive players prefer matte-backed sleeves. They shuffle more smoothly, resist clumping and reduce glare under store lighting. Gloss sleeves look sharp and are fine for casual play, but they can stick together when new. Whatever you choose, use the same sleeve for your whole Main, Extra and Side Deck.

Sleeve rules for tournaments

At sanctioned events:

  • All sleeves in your Main, Extra and Side Deck should be identical, the same brand, colour and condition, so they don't reveal anything.
  • Sleeves should be opaque on the back and free of marks.
  • Replace worn sleeves before an event. Split corners and scuffs can lead to penalties.

Storing your Yu-Gi-Oh! collection

What Best storage
Bulk Commons Storage boxes, sorted by set or archetype
Playable staples A side-loading binder
Valuable singles Perfect-fit sleeve, then a toploader or semi-rigid holder
Vintage cards Perfect-fit sleeve and toploader, stored upright in a dry box
Graded slabs A slab box, or display cases like GradedGuard cases

Preventing curl and damage

Foil cards, especially Starlight Rares, can curl when humidity changes. To protect your collection:

  • Sleeve foils immediately after opening.
  • Store cards in a stable, dry room, away from heaters, windows and damp basements.
  • Let cold packages warm up before opening them, to avoid condensation.
  • Avoid rubber bands. They dent and bend cards.

Condition directly affects value. See our Yu-Gi-Oh! card condition guide.

Playmats and deck boxes

A playmat protects cards from rough tables and helps you organize zones. A deck box that fits about 80–100 double-sleeved small cards will hold your Main, Extra and Side Deck together. Browse our accessories.

Small or Japanese-size sleeves. Yu-Gi-Oh! cards measure about 59 × 86 mm.

About 70 for a 40-card Main Deck plus full Extra and Side Decks. Buy 100 to have spares.
