Yu-Gi-Oh! Summoning Mechanics Explained: Fusion, Ritual, Synchro, Xyz, Pendulum and Link

Ultima Cards Yu-Gi-Oh! guide cover: Summoning explained

Yu-Gi-Oh! summoning has grown from one mechanic to many. Each generation of the game added a new way to bring monsters to the field, and modern decks often use several in the same turn. This guide explains every summoning mechanic in plain English, how to recognize each card type by its frame colour and how the field zones affect them. New to the game? Start with how to play Yu-Gi-Oh!.

Normal and Tribute Summons

Once per turn you can Normal Summon or Set one monster from your hand. Level 1–4 monsters need no Tribute. Level 5–6 need 1 Tribute. Level 7 and above need 2. A Special Summon is any other summon, from card effects or the mechanics below, and there's no limit on how many you can do in a turn unless a card says so.

Fusion Summon

Fusion Monsters live in the Extra Deck. You usually need a card like Polymerization (or another card that says "Fusion Summon") plus the Fusion Materials listed on the Fusion Monster. The materials go to the Graveyard, and the Fusion Monster is Special Summoned. Some Fusion Monsters have their own summoning procedures.

Ritual Summon

Ritual Monsters live in your Main Deck. You need the matching Ritual Spell and must Tribute monsters whose total Levels meet the requirement on the Ritual Spell, usually equal to or more than the Ritual Monster's Level.

Synchro Summon

Synchro Monsters live in the Extra Deck. You need one Tuner monster plus one or more non-Tuner monsters. Send them to the Graveyard, and if their Levels add up exactly to the Synchro Monster's Level, you Special Summon it. For example, a Level 3 Tuner plus a Level 5 non-Tuner makes a Level 8 Synchro.

Xyz Summon

Xyz Monsters live in the Extra Deck and have a Rank instead of a Level. You need two or more monsters of the same Level, matching the Xyz Monster's Rank and material count. Stack them under the Xyz Monster as Xyz Materials. Most Xyz Monsters use their effects by "detaching" these materials. For example, two Level 4 monsters can make a Rank 4 Xyz.

Pendulum Summon

Pendulum Monsters are half monster, half Spell. Placed in your Pendulum Zones (the leftmost and rightmost Spell & Trap Zones), two Pendulum Monsters set a Pendulum Scale, the blue and red numbers. Once per turn, you can Pendulum Summon any number of monsters from your hand with Levels between the two Scales (not including them). When a Pendulum Monster on the field would go to the Graveyard, it goes face-up to your Extra Deck instead, and you can Pendulum Summon it again later.

Link Summon

Link Monsters live in the Extra Deck. They have no Level and no DEF. Instead, they have a Link Rating and Link Arrows. To Link Summon, send face-up monsters you control to the Graveyard as materials, matching the requirements on the card. Each material normally counts as 1, but a Link Monster used as material can count as its Link Rating. Link Arrows point to zones. Monsters summoned from the Extra Deck to the zones a Link Monster points to don't need an Extra Monster Zone.

Field zones and the Extra Deck

Under current rules:

  • Fusion, Synchro and Xyz Monsters can be summoned directly to your Main Monster Zones.
  • Link Monsters, and Pendulum Monsters summoned from the Extra Deck, must go to an Extra Monster Zone or a Main Monster Zone that a Link Monster points to.

Genesys removes Link and Pendulum Monsters entirely and uses the original field layout with no Extra Monster Zones. See our Genesys guide.

How Yu-Gi-Oh! summoning mechanics combine

Modern combos often chain several mechanics: a Normal Summon leads to Special Summons from the Deck, those become Link material, the Link Monster summons more monsters, and the turn ends on a Synchro or Xyz with negation effects. Learning which mechanic your deck uses, and how its pieces connect, is the core of learning a deck. Our deck building guide explains how to build the Extra Deck around your combos.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between Synchro and Xyz?

Synchro adds different Levels together (a Tuner plus non-Tuners) to reach an exact Level. Xyz stacks monsters of the same Level to make a monster of that Rank.

Do Link Monsters have a Level?

No. Link Monsters have a Link Rating and Link Arrows instead of a Level and DEF.

How many monsters can you Pendulum Summon?

Once per turn, any number of monsters with Levels between your two Pendulum Scales, subject to available zones.

Where do Fusion Monsters go?

In your Extra Deck, and under current rules they can be summoned to your Main Monster Zones.

What is a Tuner?

A monster type used for Synchro Summons. You need exactly one Tuner, unless a card says otherwise, plus non-Tuners whose Levels add up to the Synchro Monster's Level.
