The Quarter Century Secret Rare (often shortened to QCSR) is the rarity Konami introduced for Yu-Gi-Oh!'s 25th anniversary in 2023, and it has become the headline collector chase in much of the modern TCG. This guide explains how to identify one, how it compares to a Starlight Rare, where they're found and how to collect and protect them.
What is a Quarter Century Secret Rare?
A Quarter Century Secret Rare is a full-art prismatic foil printing with two signature features:
- Speckled champagne-gold name lettering, different from the rainbow Secret Rare name or the gold Ultra Rare name.
- A 25th anniversary watermark in the text box.
The whole card face has a prismatic, Starlight-style shimmer. Under light, the card sparkles across the artwork and frame.
How to identify a Quarter Century Secret Rare
- Check the name. It should be champagne-gold with a speckled texture, not flat gold or rainbow.
- Look in the text box. Tilt the card to find the 25th anniversary watermark.
- Tilt the whole card. The prismatic foil should run across the card face.
- Confirm the set code. Look up the card's set code (for example SUDA-EN049) and check that a Quarter Century version was printed for that code.
Counterfeits of popular QCSRs exist. If a card is cheap, the watermark is missing or the foil looks flat, check it against our guide on how to spot fake Yu-Gi-Oh! cards.
Quarter Century Secret Rare vs. Starlight Rare
| Quarter Century Secret Rare | Starlight Rare | |
|---|---|---|
| Introduced in the TCG | 2023 (25th anniversary) | 2019 (Rising Rampage) |
| Name lettering | Speckled champagne gold | Prismatic |
| Text box | 25th anniversary watermark | Fully foiled, no watermark |
| Pull difficulty | Much easier | Among the hardest pulls in the game |
| Where found | Most current TCG products | Selected core boosters and special sets |
Both are premium full-foil rarities, but Starlights are far scarcer. Read our Starlight Rare guide for more.
Which sets have Quarter Century Secret Rares?
Since 2023, Quarter Century Secret Rares have appeared in most TCG products: core booster sets, the Rarity Collection series, Battles of Legend sets, Mega-Tins and special products. That's what makes them collectable as a category. You can build a binder of QCSR staples, a QCSR version of your deck, or a themed collection of QCSRs from one archetype.
What makes some QCSRs more valuable?
- Playability. QCSR versions of competitive staples have players competing with collectors for copies.
- Iconic monsters. Blue-Eyes, Dark Magician and other classic monsters draw collector demand regardless of the meta. See our Blue-Eyes and Dark Magician collector guides.
- Set and print run. QCSRs from smaller print runs are scarcer.
- Condition. The prismatic surface shows scratches and print lines easily. Clean copies sell for more, and high grades especially.
Prices go up and down with demand and reprints. Buy what you want to own, not as an investment.
Collecting Quarter Century Secret Rares
A few common collecting goals:
- QCSR deck: a playable deck where every card is the QCSR version. It's a long-term project, since not every card has one.
- Archetype collection: every QCSR from one archetype you love.
- Staples binder: the generic cards every deck uses, in QCSR.
- Graded showcase: a few favourite cards graded and displayed.
Protecting your Quarter Century Secret Rares
- Sleeve immediately in a perfect-fit sleeve, then a small-size outer sleeve. Yu-Gi-Oh! cards need Japanese-size sleeves. See our Yu-Gi-Oh! sleeves guide.
- Store flat and dry. Full-foil cards curl in humidity.
- Consider grading your best copies. See our Yu-Gi-Oh! grading guide.
